The Nissan Consult III is a computer program developed by the company Nissan. The software works with either Windows or macOS operating systems and can be found in many cars produced by the company since 2001. This blog post will discuss what happened when an update was pushed to this software which caused it to freeze, necessitating that the only option was to hard-reset the car's computer system. Additionally, it will explore why certain conditions arise that require these types of resets and how they relate to problems in general. One conclusion is that there are significant issues with vehicle companies not doing enough research into how their software would react in certain situations before releasing it. This is a serious issue that must be addressed. The following is a case study where the Nissan Consult III was used in a 2015 Nissan Altima from 2014 to 2016. While it is theoretically possible for this software to affect any car with the same software release date, this research was focused on the car in question due to its age and how recently it was purchased. The car's computer system has two separate devices installed: a 'car computer' is installed by the dealer and a dashboard-based 'navi' device which is built into the vehicle by Nissan. The car computer is a micro computer that houses it's operating system, the software that controls the temperature, speedometer, radio, etc. Additionally, there are other plug-in devices that connect to it via USB ports. The 'navi' device is a built-in touch screen that houses its own software. It is meant to be used as a standalone device and cannot access the 'car computer', although the two communicate with each other and share information. It can essentially be thought of as an independent tablet with a built-in GPS and voice functionality. The only caveat is that it can only access one application at a time; changing applications will exit any currently running windows and return to the start screen. The car computer, however, has the ability to remain open at all times. The following was done for this case study: Given that the 'navi' device is meant to be used as a standalone device, it is also controlled by its own set of software. While its software can be updated by Nissan directly in the future, in practice there are very few updates that apply to this device since most of its functions are tied directly into installing other Nissan applications on it. The following is a list of applications that came pre-installed on the car computer: Additionally, some applets such as Garmin and Volvo were installed after purchase and added after purchase of the vehicle. The following is not considered in this case study: Nissan Consult III has a 'reset' function which is available in the settings menu. This is supposed to be used when something goes wrong with the various functions of the car. When 'End User License Agreement' (EULA) does not open up, it will go to this menu and reset the computer system. On occasion this will freeze when the device is trying to load, causing it to stay on that screen indefinitely instead of allowing you to actually use it for resetting. This can either happen when trying to open or close its window or simply after starting or stopping an application. cfa1e77820
